Al Qalam is based in Darb al-Labbana in Al-Khalifa, in an exceptionally distinctive urban and heritage area on a hill facing the Sultan Hassan and Al-Rifa'i mosques in the heart of historic Cairo. The Darb al-Labbana area is crowded with monuments and heritage and historic buildings, but it suffers from neglect and marginalization. We therefore strive to make a long-term impact on the surrounding area and restore the beauty of the district long known as “Montmartre of the Citadel”, so that it once again becomes a destination for amateur and professional artists who use its spaces to present their artistic creations. We also aim to offer training opportunities in Islamic and traditional arts to the residents of Al-Khalifa so they can earn an income from their products and improve their livelihoods, and to integrate Al Qalam into the tourism route of historic Cairo, in cooperation with travel agencies and tourism companies, to introduce the output of the Egyptian school of Arabic calligraphy and Islamic ornamentation.
