Al Qalam offered an intensive 3-month online program for interested people inside and outside Egypt, starting in mid-August 2020, covering the technical aspects of building an Arabic typeface, from converting a design into a suitable digital image to building a ready-to-use font.
Ten participants from diverse backgrounds joined us, enthusiastic, committed and available full-time, particularly calligraphers, type designers and developers, graphic designers, graduates of fine arts colleges, and software and IT companies, who work or aspire to work on designing and digitizing Arabic letters in an innovative way and studying them in depth, and who wish to reimagine and develop their practice in this field through their design or technical backgrounds.

Hosny is a software developer specializing in text rendering technologies and computer font processing, a type designer specializing in Arabic and mathematical fonts, and a former physician.
The program included a set of educational sessions as well as a final project in which participants committed to producing an Arabic typeface of their choice (individually or in groups).
