Ornamentation of the Qur'an of Sultan Baybars al-Jashnagir (Baybars II). This Qur'an is among the most important of its era, dating from the early 8th century AH. It is divided into seven volumes, which gave the illuminators ample space to show their skill and their sense of filling space in a way that interacts with the calligraphy as a whole without overpowering it.
This is the opening page of one of the seven parts, with a decorative panel at its center bearing the word «السبع» (the Seventh) in white.
Using blue and red gouache and 24-karat real gold
